Tunisian extended stitches have all the same construction pattern: work any of the basic stitches (Tss, Tks, Trs, Tfs), followed by 1 chain (ch) before making the next stitch.

This additional chain made before moving to the next stitch is not adding or closing any loop on the hook. Make a basic stitch, then simply make 1 chain that will go through the loop of the basic stitch you have just made. You do not add a loop to your row. You do not close (remove) any loop from your row. The stitch count per row remains unchanged. Your stitches are just… taller by 1 chain.

Extended Tunisian knit stitch

Make a knit stitch, then a chain before moving to the next stitch.

Extended Tunisian full stitch

Make a full stitch, then a chain before moving to the next stitch.

Extended Tunisian reverse stitch

Make a reverse stitch, then a chain before moving to the next stitch.

Note on edge stitches

Extended stitches are taller than basic stitches. It is therefore wise to adjust the height of the edge stitches as well.

At the start of the FwdP, before picking up your first extended stitch, when you have only one loop on your hook, make one chain.

At the end of the FwdP, to pick up the last loop into the edge stitch of the previous row, insert your hook under the 2 strands on the side, then make one chain.

At the start of the RetP, you have 2 options:

• either you make one chain, then you start making yarn overs through 2 loops (“standard” RetP)
• or you do NOT start with a chain, you make a yarn over that you pull through 2 loops directly from the start of the RetP

My personal preference goes to the second option. The edge is slightly “indented”, but it is neat.

Any stitch can be extended in standard (non Tunisian) crochet as well

You can add a chain in the execution of any basic stitch in standard crochet.

• extended single crochet: insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), chain 1 (still 2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull yarn through 2 loops (to close the sc)
  
• extended half double crochet: yarn over, insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), chain 1 (still 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull yarn through 3 loops (to close the extended hdb)
  
• extended double crochet: yarn over, insert your hook in the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), chain 1 (still 3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull yarn through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook), yarn over and pull yarn through 2 remaining loops (to close the extended db)
