There is not one but several purl stitches in Tunisian crochet. A stitch is called “purl” when you bring the working yarn in front of your work before inserting your hook into the fabric. Then, the working yarn goes back behind your work before you make a yarn over and you pull up a loop.

There is more fabric to the front of the work compared to when you do not purl the same stitch. This plays a role in the fight against curling.

Tunisian purl simple stitch (Tpss)

It is done exactly like the Tunisian simple stitch, except that, before inserting your hook into the fabric, bring the working yarn in front of your work. Then insert your hook under the front vertical bar. Bring back the working yarn to the back of your work. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

Tunisian purl knit stitch (Tpks)

It is done exactly like the Tunisian knit stitch, except that, before inserting your hook into the fabric, bring the working yarn in front of your work. Then insert your hook in between the front and back vertical bars of a stitch, from front to back, through the fabric. Bring back the working yarn to the back of your work. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

Tunisian purl full stitch (Tpfs)

It is done exactly like the Tunisian reverse stitch, except that, before inserting your hook into the fabric, bring the working yarn in front of your work. Then insert your hook under the RetP chain between 2 stitches, from front to back. Bring back the working yarn to the back of your work. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

Tunisian purl reverse stitch (Tprs)

Same as for the other stitches described here above: Bring the working yarn in front of your work. Then insert your hook under the back vertical bar. Bring back the working yarn to the back of your work. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

A very interesting stitch! the front side may not look absolutely beautiful, but…. Have a look at the back side (further below).

Now try and make a swatch where you alternate twisted up stitches with purl reverse stitches and see what kind of stitch pattern you get. I’ll give you a hint: it’s almost reversible, looking the same on both sides.
